Video – Fiction Genres – Realistic Fiction

Well, it’s been a pretty uneventful 2020.

Just kidding! Just look at those headlines — for one, I finally made a new fiction genre video! It only took me four and a half years, a global pandemic, and a home quarantine that had me finishing out and beginning a new school year from inside my home. Wow! I hope at this time you and the ones you love are safe, sane, and liking and subscribing.

My new video goes into what exactly we mean when we say “realistic fiction.” If you’re looking for the elements of realistic fiction, or a definition of realistic fiction, or a kid-friendly video explaining realistic fiction, or any other search friendly terms that may lead you here, you came to the right place!

But seriously, realistic fiction is such a big part of young readers’ lives. Fiction, as we all know, means a text that came from the author’s imagination. Most kids tell me fiction means “fake,” but I always bristle at that definition. Because a very large portion of the fiction children read is not at all “fake,” but grounded in the every day settings, themes, people, and problems that occur in the world they recognize.

Realistic ficiton is what happens when people stop being polite, and start getting real. It’s also what happens when seven strangers are picked to live in a house together and barely run a surf shop. Am I dating myself yet?

I am SO happy to see you’ve created another great genre’ video! As a librarian, I use your fantasy/sci-fi ones with our 6th graders every year and I am always checking to see if you’ve created another one. Though I don’t wish total isolation upon you due to a pandemic again, I do hope you keep these coming!

This makes me so happy! My students love your Sci-Fi and Fantasy videos and I’ve been hoping that you’d make more! I’m sorry that it took a pandemic, but thank you so much for taking the time to make a share these videos!

Thanks so much for creating your genre videos. They’re super helpful! Perhaps you could post your Venmo id or something so people like me could at least buy you a coffee?
